How Selling Works at conSHINEment: Payouts, Seasons, What We Buy, What We Don't

If you've been Googling 'sell clothes for cash near me,' 'consignment store Jersey City,' or 'where to sell used clothes in NJ,' you've found the right place. Here's a complete, step-by-step look at how the selling process works at conSHINEment from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave with cash in hand.

The conSHINEment Selling Experience

Our goal is to make selling your clothes feel comfortable, fast, and worthwhile. Most visits take between 5 and 20 minutes, depending on how many items you bring and how busy the store is. While our buyers review your pieces, you're welcome to browse the racks, relax, or simply enjoy the feeling of a lighter closet on the horizon.

Step 1: Check-In and Welcome

You arrive with your items and check in with our team. If it's your first time selling, we walk you through the process, answer any quick questions, verify your ID, and have you sign any necessary forms. A valid U.S. government-issued ID or passport (with visa, if applicable) is required. Sellers must be 18 or older.

Step 2: Initial Sort

Our buyers do a quick first pass through your items and immediately pull out anything clearly outside our criteria such as children's clothing, formal gowns, heavily worn sneakers, items with broken hardware, or brands we don't accept. This keeps the process moving efficiently so you're not waiting longer than necessary.

Step 3: Detailed Review

For the remaining items, we take a closer, more careful look. We assess style, condition, brand, fabric quality, and how each piece fits into what our shoppers are currently looking for. Vintage 90s and early 2000s clothing, strong designer and streetwear labels, quality everyday basics, and standout statement pieces tend to perform especially well.

Step 4: Price Quoting and Offer Presentation

Each accepted item is assigned a quoted in-store selling price based on brand, condition, and how comparable pieces are currently selling in our store and across the resale market. We present your full offer and walk you through the tiered payout calculation clearly and transparently. You can ask questions, accept everything, accept only some items, or decline entirely. There is no pressure because this is a conversation, not a one-way decision.

Step 5: Payment

Once you accept the offer, you choose cash or store credit and we process your payment on the spot. Any items that were not accepted or that you chose not to sell are returned to you. If you're moving, downsizing, or simply don't want to bring items back home, you also have the option to donate them. We'll make sure they're directed appropriately.

We Buy Seasonally: Here Is What That Means for You

At conSHINEment, we purchase items based on the current or upcoming season to ensure our store always feels fresh, relevant, and exciting for shoppers. Spring and summer collections, fall outerwear, winter accessories, and seasonal footwear are all prioritized when the time is right. However, we also buy high-demand items year-round regardless of season and this includes designer brands, iconic streetwear, luxury handbags, and authentic vintage pieces with strong ongoing resale appeal.

Not sure whether we're currently buying your category? Call the store and ask. We're happy to give you a quick answer so you don't make an unnecessary trip.

Cleanout Guidelines

To ensure a smooth experience for everyone, we ask that you limit cleanouts to approximately 50 items per visit. If you have more, we recommend splitting them across multiple visits so our buyers can give your pieces the attention they deserve. This limit also helps keep wait times reasonable for all of our sellers throughout the day. Coming earlier in the selling window typically means shorter waits and more one-on-one time with our team.

What We Accept

We buy adult clothing, shoes, and accessories for both Men's and Women's styles. The categories and qualities our buyers are most excited about include:

•        Handbags ranging from authentic vintage shoulder bags to contemporary designer totes from labels like Coach, Kate Spade, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Chanel

•        Designer and premium footwear from sought-after brands like New Balance, Salomon, On Running, Dr. Martens, Jeffrey Campbell, Frye, Birkenstock, Hoka, and others

•        Designer apparel from contemporary and luxury labels with strong resale appeal

•        Authentic vintage clothing from the 1990s and early 2000s featuring genuine pieces with the quality, construction, and character that made that era iconic

•        Streetwear from recognized labels like Stüssy, Carhartt WIP, Supreme, BAPE, Kith, Fear of God, and similar brands

•        Quality everyday basics and trend-forward casualwear that our shoppers are actively looking for

•        Premium activewear from brands like Lululemon, Alo, Vuori, Girlfriend Collective, and Nike

Items should be clean, in wearable condition, free of major damage, and free of odors. Well-prepared items move through our review process faster and are more likely to be accepted and priced higher.

What We Do Not Accept

To save you time, here is a clear list of categories and items we generally do not buy:

•        Formal gowns and occasion-specific formalwear

•        Children's clothing and kids' footwear

•        Items with pilling, fading, shrinking, stains, holes, or odors

•        Pieces missing size labels, broken or missing hardware, or with heavy alterations

•        Pajamas and intimates, even if new or unworn

•        Heavily worn sneakers with significant creasing, sole separation, or very worn bottoms

•        Ultra fast-fashion brands including Shein, Romwe, Boohoo, PrettyLittleThing, Fashion Nova, Cider, Zaful, and similar labels

•        Low-tier mass-market brands such as Target Apparel, Old Navy, Walmart Fashion, Gap Factory, Primark, and similar retailers

•        Overproduced mall and teen retail brands with minimal resale value

How to Prepare Your Items

A little preparation goes a long way. Before bringing your items to conSHINEment, we recommend washing or dry cleaning your clothing, so everything smells fresh and looks its best. Check each piece carefully for stains, holes, pilling, or any damage you might have overlooked. Confirm that all buttons, zippers, and hardware are intact and functioning properly. Fold or hang your items neatly rather than stuffing them into bags well-presented items tend to move through our review process faster and are more likely to receive stronger offers.

What Happens to Items We Don't Buy

Items that aren't accepted for purchase can be taken back with you, or you can choose to leave them for donation. When coordination allows, we direct donated items to our two local non-profit partners: Dickinson Care Closet, which serves the Dickinson High School community in Jersey City, and Community Treasures, which serves the Greenville community and beyond. Some items may also be placed on clearance before being considered for donation, giving every piece an extra opportunity to find a home rather than heading to a landfill.
